"To rise to the challenges of the 21st century, we need to harness our full potential. That requires dismantling gender stereotypes. On this International Day of Women and Girls in Science, let’s pledge to end the gender imbalance in science."

UN Secretary-General António Guterres

On 22 December 2015, the General Assembly decided to establish an annual International Day to recognize the critical role women and girls play in science and technology, through Resolution A/RES/70/212(link is external). UNESCO has made gender equality a global priority and the support of young girls, their education and their full ability to make their ideas heard are levers for development and peace.

Where do the women and girls of the world now stand in science five years after this declaration?

- less than 30% of women in the world are researchers

- around 30 per cent of all female students select STEM-related fields in higher education

- Globally, female students’ enrollment is in ICT (3 per cent), natural science, mathematics and statistics (5 per cent) and in engineering, manufacturing and construction (8 per cent).

- 12 percent of onscreen characters with an identifiable STEM job are women.

What do you think?

Is this comparably progress? Is enough being done to close the gap?

Thank you UNESCO for making this a priority.
